Understanding the upcoming reclassification of Lilial

Understanding the upcoming reclassification of Lilial

As many of you will be aware, Butylphenyl Methylpropional (commonly referred to as Lilial) has been reclassified under the 15th ATP, triggering an automatic ban in cosmetics and limiting its use in home fragrance products to just 0.3%. These changes apply from the 1st of March, 2022 and we want to explain what this means for our products.

The technical information behind this change is quite complex in nature, to fully understand the reasoning behind the change and the responsibilities makers have under the reclassification; we would suggest reading this article which has been prepared by the experts at CLP Services for Candle Makers: Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Lilial) CAS 80-54-6 (UPDATE).

We understand the above is a lot to take in however the good news is that all of our currently stocked oils do not contain Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Lilial).

If you have discontinued oils, including the original formulations from ourselves (alpha/numerical batch numbers); you would need to check the SDS and Allergen Declaration to see if the oil contains Butylphenyl Methylpropional (Lilial) or not by checking for the following:

SDS (Section 3.2): CAS Number 80-54-6

Allergen Declaration: 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)propionaldehyde or Butylphenyl Methylpropional (CAS: 80-54-6)

If there is no listing on either document, the oil is fine to continue using. If present, it’s our understanding that products made with these oils may no longer be placed on the market for sale after the 1st of March.

If you remain unsure about how these changes may impact you, we would advise seeking advice from your Trading Standards officer about your existing products.
